A Quick Note to Stephenie Meyer
Hi, Stephenie.
I was very, very sorry to hear that a draft of Midnight Sun was leaked to the Internet. It’s a horrible invasion of privacy and the worst possible violation of trust between an author and a first reader.
I’d like to suggest that it won’t be a complete disaster for the eventual sales of Midnight Sun, however. I can think of several authors (Cory Doctorow, John Scalzi, Charles Stross, and others) who have reported increased sales due to Internet exposure.
That’s not why I’m writing, however. I’m here to point out that your inclusion of a list of songs obtained through Playlist seems to be inconsistent with your strong stance for creators’ rights, given that Playlist is currently being sued by the RIAA for serving up music without paying royalties.
If music inspires your writing, why not use your respected position as an author respected by many young people—including my daughter Elena, who will be utterly heartbroken at the news that Midnight Sun was stillborn—to stand up for creators’ rights in all fields of endeavor?
